TOEIC Link Aerial Work Platform Vocabulary: The Rental-Delivery-Familiarization-Return Cluster for Part 4 and Part 7
An equipment rental agreement is a document built almost entirely out of numbers that resemble each other. A scissor lift quote will state a platform height, a working height, a weight capacity, a machine weight, a day rate, a week rate, and a delivery charge — and the question will ask for exactly one of them while offering three of the others as choices.
The cluster runs in four stages. A quote prices the machine and the period. Delivery puts it on site, within a window and subject to access. Familiarization is the short handover that makes an operator legally allowed to use that specific machine. Return triggers an inspection that decides whether the quoted total is the total.
Unlike most rental vocabulary, this one carries a safety layer that the exam uses as a discriminator: the fall protection rules differ between a scissor lift and a boom lift, and a passage will mix both machine types in one order.

Why the exam likes this cluster
Two heights for one machine. Platform height is where the floor of the basket stops; working height adds roughly two metres for a standing person's reach. A question naming a ceiling needs one of them and only one.
The day rate is never the total. Delivery, pickup, a damage waiver, fuel, and an environmental fee all sit outside it. A total that matches the day rate times the days is almost always wrong.
Familiarization is not certification. Training makes an operator qualified in general; familiarization covers this machine's controls. A passage will use both words within a few lines.
Fall protection depends on machine type. A harness with a lanyard is required in a boom lift; a scissor lift with intact guardrails generally is not treated the same way. One order containing both machines produces a clean two-answer question.
Stage 1 — the quote
Verbs and collocations: request a quote, specify the platform height, confirm the capacity, quote a day rate, prorate the week, waive the delivery charge, add the damage waiver, extend the rental.

Platform height versus working height is the whole first question. The 26-foot scissor lift offers a platform height of 7.9 m and a working height of 9.9 m. If the passage says work must reach a 9.5 m ceiling fixture, the answer is the machine whose working height clears it — and a choice built on platform height will fail by exactly two metres.
Platform capacity limits people plus tools. Rated capacity 320 kg, including occupants, tools, and materials. A question about whether two workers and a materials load may ride together is arithmetic against this number, and the word including is why.
Machine weight matters for floors, not for lifting. Machine weight 2,400 kg; confirm floor loading before indoor use. A question asking why a building manager was contacted is answered here, not by height.
Week rate is rarely seven day rates. Day rate ¥18,000; week rate ¥54,000. A passage describing a five-day job is inviting you to notice that the week rate is cheaper. This is one of the few genuinely arithmetic questions in the cluster.
Minimum rental period overrides short jobs. A one-day minimum applies to all deliveries. Half-day work still bills a day.
Stage 2 — delivery and site access
Verbs and collocations: schedule delivery, confirm the delivery window, check the access route, measure the door opening, coordinate with building management, unload by tail lift, position the machine, arrange pickup.
Nouns: delivery window, access route, door opening, turning radius, ground conditions, floor loading, elevator dimensions, laydown area, delivery charge, pickup charge, standby time.
Delivery window is a range, not a time. Delivery is scheduled for Tuesday between 7:00 and 11:00. A question asking when work can begin cannot be answered with 7:00.
Access route is where jobs fail. Confirm a minimum door opening of 0.9 m and a clear route free of steps. A passage mentioning a loading dock with a step is planting the problem that a later email reports.
Standby time is charged when the driver waits. Standby is billed in 30-minute increments after the first 15 minutes. Questions about an unexpected line on the invoice are usually this.
Pickup must be requested and is not automatic. Rental continues to accrue until pickup is requested. A choice saying billing stopped when the job finished misses the request step, which is the single most common invoice trap in this cluster.
Stage 3 — operator familiarization and fall protection
Verbs and collocations: conduct familiarization, walk through the controls, demonstrate the emergency lowering, review the operator's manual, don a harness, attach the lanyard to the anchor point, inspect the guardrails, close the chain.

Familiarization is machine-specific and short. The delivery driver will conduct familiarization on arrival; this does not replace operator training. That second clause exists to be a question.
Emergency lowering is the control everyone is shown. Ground personnel must know the location of the emergency lowering valve before the platform is raised. A question asking what a person on the ground must know wants this, not the keys.
Anchor point is the piece that makes harness use meaningful. Boom lift occupants must wear a full-body harness with a lanyard attached to the manufacturer's anchor point inside the platform. Attaching to adjacent structure is the classic wrong choice.
Guardrail and entry chain are the scissor lift's protection. Operate only with guardrails in place and the entry chain closed. A passage describing a worker who removed the chain to pass material through is setting up a compliance question, not a productivity one.
Tilt alarm stops the machine on slopes. The tilt alarm will prevent elevation on uneven ground; reposition rather than override. The word override appearing in a choice is almost always wrong in this cluster.
Stage 4 — return and final invoice
Verbs and collocations: request pickup, clean the machine, refuel to the contracted level, report damage, complete the return inspection, assess a cleaning charge, release the deposit, issue the final invoice.
Nouns: return inspection, condition report, fuel level, cleaning charge, damage assessment, wear and tear, deposit, final invoice, credit, dispute window.
Return inspection is where extra charges originate. The machine will be inspected on return; charges for damage beyond normal wear and tear will be added to the final invoice. A question about why a total changed points here.
Normal wear and tear is the exclusion that limits those charges. Scuffing and tire wear are considered normal; punctured tires and bent rails are not. A question distinguishing two kinds of damage is answered by this phrase.
Fuel level is contractual. Return with a full tank or a refueling charge applies at the posted rate. The posted rate is always higher than the pump, which is why the clause exists.
Dispute window limits complaints. Charges must be disputed within 14 days of the final invoice. A passage with an email dated three weeks later is testing whether you noticed.
The five traps, in the order they appear
- Platform height used where working height is asked. The gap is about two metres, and the choices are built on it.
- Day rate multiplied when the week rate is cheaper. Compare before calculating.
- Billing assumed to stop at job completion. It stops at requested pickup.
- Harness rules applied to the wrong machine. Boom lift and scissor lift differ.
- Delivery window read as a delivery time. Work starts after the window closes, not when it opens.
A worked sequence
A Part 7 triple passage opens with a rental quote for a warehouse lighting job. Two machines: a 26-foot electric scissor lift, platform height 7.9 m, working height 9.9 m, capacity 320 kg, day rate ¥18,000, week rate ¥54,000; and a 45-foot articulating boom, working height 15.7 m, day rate ¥32,000. Delivery ¥12,000 each way. One-day minimum. Rental accrues until pickup is requested.
The second document is the site's equipment policy: familiarization on arrival is mandatory and does not substitute for operator training; boom lift occupants must wear a full-body harness attached to the platform anchor point; scissor lifts require guardrails in place and the entry chain closed; the tilt alarm may not be overridden.
The third document is an email from the site supervisor: fixtures are at 9.5 m in the main bay and 14 m over the mezzanine void; the job runs Monday to Friday; delivery is booked Monday between 7:00 and 11:00; the crew finished Friday afternoon and left the machines in the laydown area over the weekend.
The questions run down the traps. Which machine is needed for the main bay? The scissor lift — 9.9 m working height clears 9.5 m, while its 7.9 m platform height does not, and that mismatch is the whole question. What will the scissor lift cost for the week? ¥54,000, not five times ¥18,000. Why did the final invoice exceed the quote? Pickup was not requested on Friday, so rental continued over the weekend. What protective equipment is required over the mezzanine void? A full-body harness with the lanyard attached to the boom platform's anchor point.
A choice giving ¥90,000 for the scissor lift is the trap: it multiplies the day rate across five days and ignores the week rate sitting two lines above it.
What to drill
For every rental passage, extract two heights and label them: platform and working. Then extract three money items: rate, delivery both ways, and any minimum. Then find the two events that end the rental — job completion and requested pickup — and note that only the second one stops the meter. Finally, if two machine types appear, split the safety rules by machine before reading any safety question. In this cluster the arithmetic is easy and the labels are everything.
