Stage 3 — use the session
Verbs and collocations: get online, browse, stay connected, share the connection, report a problem.
Nouns: session, bandwidth, signal, coverage, connection speed.
With access granted, the visitor uses the session: they get online, and the notice may set limits — coverage is strongest in the meeting rooms, bandwidth is shared, and streaming may be blocked. A Part 4 message noting "the signal is weakest near the elevators" answers a "why can't the visitor connect in the hallway?" question; a Part 7 notice about connection speed during busy hours points to the session, not the login. The reader who separates "no coverage here" from "wrong password" picks the right cause of a failed connection.
Stage 4 — let the access expire
Verbs and collocations: expire, time out, disconnect, reconnect, request a new code.
Nouns: expiration, time limit, day pass, renewal, session timeout.
Guest access is not permanent: it expires at a set time or times out after a period of inactivity, and to continue the visitor must reconnect or request a new code at the desk. A Part 4 message saying "your day pass ends at midnight; ask reception for a new one tomorrow" answers a "what should the visitor do the next day?" question; a Part 7 notice describing a session timeout after thirty idle minutes points to the expiry step, not a technical fault. The trap treats a normal timeout as a broken connection — the reader who knows the difference does not send the visitor to the help desk.
The paraphrase traps ETS builds on this cluster
- Temporary vs. permanent. A guest password is single-use for the day; an employee login is permanent. A question asking whether the visitor can reuse the same code tomorrow turns on this word.
- Expired vs. dropped. Access that times out on schedule is not the same as a connection that drops from a weak signal. The first needs a new code; the second needs a stronger location.
- Building-wide vs. floor-limited. "Guest Wi-Fi is available throughout the building" and "guest Wi-Fi covers the third-floor meeting rooms only" answer opposite questions about where the visitor can work.
- Select vs. authenticate. Choosing the right network and entering the password are two separate steps; a question about "the first thing to do" wants the network, not the code.
How to drill this cluster
Practice the cluster as a four-step arc, not a word list. Given a Part 4 front-desk announcement, name the step being described — select, authenticate, use, or expire — before you look at the options. Given a Part 7 access notice, underline every phrase that fixes a limit (temporary, day pass, third floor only, until midnight) and match it to the question's exact demand.
