TOEIC Link Listening — Graphic Question Strategy for Charts and Schedules: Pre-Reading the Visual So the Audio Only Has to Confirm
Graphic questions — the ones that say "look at the graphic" and pair a talk with a chart, schedule, price list, or floor plan — are designed to punish divided attention. The trap is that candidates try to do two things at once: understand the visual and follow the audio in real time. By the time they have parsed the schedule, the sentence that pointed to the answer has already played. The fix is a sequence, not a skill: read the graphic before the audio starts, decide which piece of information the audio will supply, and then let the talk simply confirm the one detail you are waiting for.
Internal practice-corpus data shows that graphic questions are missed at a higher rate than ordinary detail questions on the same talk, and the errors concentrate on schedules and multi-column charts — exactly the visuals that take longest to read. When the visual is slow to parse, real-time reading fails and pre-reading wins.
The graphic gives you the answers; the audio gives you the key
Every graphic question works on the same principle: the answer choices are not the values in the audio. The answer choices are values from the graphic, and the audio supplies a different value that lets you look up the answer. Read a floor-plan question and the four options are room names; the audio says "the meeting is in the room next to the kitchen," and you use the graphic to convert "next to the kitchen" into the room name. The audio never says the answer — it gives you the key that unlocks the graphic.
This means the two columns of a chart have different jobs:
- The lookup column is what the audio will mention (a time, a day, a price tier, a location clue).
- The answer column is what the question asks for and what the options are drawn from (a room, a session, a discount, a person).
Your entire task is to hear the lookup value and read across to the answer column. Identify which column is which before the talk begins.
Pre-read in the narration gap
TOEIC gives you a short narration window before each talk ("Questions 62 through 64 refer to the following talk and schedule"). That gap is your working time. Spend it on the graphic, not on re-reading the question stems word for word. In that window:
- Read the question stem to find the answer column. "At what time will the keynote begin?" tells you the answer is a time, so the other column (session names) is the lookup key.
- Read the graphic's structure, not every value. You need to know the columns and how they map to each other, not memorize all the rows. You will look up one row when the audio names it.
- Predict the lookup cue. If the answer is a time and the lookup is a session name, get ready to hear a session name — "the keynote," "the workshop," "the closing session."

The paraphrase trap in the lookup value
The audio rarely names the lookup value exactly as the graphic labels it. A schedule row labeled "Marketing Workshop" is referred to in the talk as "the session on branding." A price tier labeled "Premium" is called "the top plan." The graphic gives you the printed label; the audio gives you a paraphrase, and you must bridge them. Candidates who wait to hear the exact printed word miss the cue entirely.
To defend against this, when you pre-read the lookup column, mentally rephrase each label into how a speaker might refer to it. "Room 3B" might become "the room on the third floor" or "the last room on the left." Three graphic types, three lookup habits
Each common graphic type has a characteristic lookup pattern worth drilling separately:
- Schedules and agendas. Lookup = session/activity name; answer = time or room. Watch for changes: "the workshop has been moved to 3 p.m." overrides the printed time, and the answer is the new value, not the graphic's.
- Price lists and menus. Lookup = plan/item; answer = price or feature. Watch for conditional cues: "with the discount code, the standard plan drops to the premium price" requires two-step lookup.
- Floor plans and maps. Lookup = spatial relation ("next to," "across from," "at the end of"); answer = room or location name. Pre-read the spatial neighbors of each labeled space so directional cues resolve instantly.
The routine, start to finish
Put the pieces into a fixed sequence you run on every graphic question:
- Narration gap: read the stem, identify the answer column and the lookup column.
- Structure scan: learn the columns and their mapping; do not memorize every value.
- Paraphrase pre-load: rephrase each lookup label into how a speaker might say it.
- Listen for one cue: wait for the lookup value; ignore everything else the talk says.
- Look up and commit: hear the cue, read across to the answer column, mark it, and reset for the next question before the talk moves on.
The discipline is doing nothing during the talk except waiting for the single cue you prepared for. Everything else in the audio is context you do not need. When graphic questions stop being a real-time reading race and become a one-cue lookup, they convert from the section's most-missed item into a reliable point.
