TOEIC Link Listening — "Look at the Graphic" Integration: Matching Spoken Audio to a Table, Map, or List Under Part 3 and 4 Time Pressure
A specific subset of TOEIC Link listening questions breaks the pattern that governs the rest of the section. Instead of asking what a speaker said, meant, or intended, the "Look at the graphic" item hands you a visual — a meeting schedule, a product price list, a building directory, a discount coupon — and asks a question whose answer appears in neither the audio alone nor the graphic alone. The answer lives only at the intersection: the audio supplies one coordinate, the graphic supplies the other, and you must join them under real-time pressure while a conversation keeps moving.
Candidates who treat these items like ordinary detail questions fail them predictably. They listen for the answer to be spoken, and it never is. The speaker says "let's take the option that leaves at nine," and the option's name — the thing the answer choices actually list — appears only in the graphic's timetable. The audio deliberately withholds the label and gives you the property; the graphic converts the property back into the label. This guide teaches that conversion as a trained reflex.
Why the answer is never spoken directly
The design principle is the same one that governs paraphrase in reading: if the answer could be captured by transcription alone, the item would test hearing rather than comprehension. So the item writers split the information. The graphic holds a two-column mapping — day to room, item to price, name to floor, time to gate — and the audio references one column while the answer choices list the other. To answer, you hear the referenced value, find it in the graphic, and read across to its partner.
This means the single most dangerous habit is waiting to hear an answer choice. On these items the answer choice is usually the column you will not hear. If the choices are room numbers, the speakers will discuss the department or the time, not the room; if the choices are prices, they will discuss the product, not the figure. Recognizing which column is "spoken" and which is "answered" before the audio starts is the whole game, and it depends on the pre-reading discipline covered in detail question anchoring by pre-reading stems.
The three graphic types the test recycles
1. The two-column lookup table
Schedules, price lists, and directories are all the same structure: a key column and a value column. The audio names a key ("the marketing session," "the standard package"); the choices list values (times, prices, rooms). Pre-read the table so you know which column feeds the answer, then listen only for the key. When you hear it, your eyes are already on the row.
2. The map or floor plan
The audio gives directions or a relative position — "the office next to the elevator," "the booth across from the entrance" — and the choices are labeled locations (A, B, C, D on the diagram). Here the graphic encodes spatial relationships the audio references verbally. Before the audio, orient yourself: fix the landmarks (elevator, entrance, reception) so that a spoken relation resolves instantly to a labeled point. This draws on the spatial-reference skills in deictic expression and spatial reference resolution.
3. The conditional or annotated list
Coupons, agendas with footnotes, and tiered discount charts add a condition — "20% off orders over $100," "the afternoon slot is cancelled." The audio supplies the qualifying fact ("we're spending about a hundred and twenty"), and you apply the graphic's rule to select the correct tier. These items test whether you can hold a spoken quantity and run it against a printed threshold in real time.
The four-week training protocol
Week 1 — Column identification. For each practice item, before playing the audio, write one word: which column of the graphic the answer choices come from. Do this cold, from the graphic and choices alone. The goal is to make "spoken column vs. answered column" an automatic first read.
Week 2 — Pre-read timing. The narrator's question-and-choice reading gives you a few seconds of graphic-study time. Drill using only that window: study the graphic, form the key-to-value map, and freeze it before the conversation begins. If you are still reading the graphic when the speakers start, you have already lost the item.
Week 3 — Hold-and-resolve. Practice hearing the key value and holding it while the conversation continues past it, because the graphic item is often not the last question in the set. Resolve the lookup silently and keep tracking the audio for the remaining two questions. Losing the thread after the graphic match is the most common way candidates trade one correct answer for two wrong ones.
Week 4 — Mixed sets under full timing. Run complete Part 3 and Part 4 sets so graphic items arrive unannounced among ordinary ones. The skill under test is now switching modes — recognizing a graphic item from its stem, invoking the lookup reflex, and returning to normal listening — without a beat of hesitation.
Common failure modes
- Listening for the label. Waiting to hear the room number or price that only the graphic contains. Retrain to listen for the key and read the value.
- Studying the graphic too long. Reading the whole table instead of identifying the two relevant columns, then missing the opening exchange.
- Dropping the set. Solving the graphic question correctly, then losing the next two questions because attention stayed on the diagram.
- Ignoring the condition. Treating an annotated coupon or tiered chart as a plain lookup and missing the threshold that changes the answer.
The "Look at the graphic" item rewards a narrow, well-drilled skill: know which column you must hear, freeze the graphic before the audio, hold the spoken value, and read across without falling behind. Trained as a distinct reflex rather than absorbed into general listening, it becomes one of the most reliably answerable question types in the section.
