Why quality-control vocabulary keeps returning

Reason 1 — inspection has a clear pass/fail outcome. A check ends in one of two states: it meets the standard or it fails inspection. That binary gives ETS a clean anchor for detail questions ("What was the result of the inspection?") without requiring any engineering knowledge.
Reason 2 — the documents are structured. Inspection reports and quality memos have fixed fields — sample size, defect rate, tolerance, corrective action. Stage 2 — inspecting
The active middle, heavy in Part 3 dialogue and Part 4 announcements.
Verbs and collocations: conduct an inspection, carry out a check, sample a batch, test a unit, measure the output.

Stage 3 — detecting defects
When a check turns up a problem, the vocabulary shifts to fault language.

Once a defect is found, the workflow moves to fixing the cause.

The phrase root cause is a favorite Part 4 and Part 7 term because it signals investigation beyond the symptom. A memo that asks a supplier to "identify the root cause and prevent recurrence" is the kind of structured request the test loves to summarize into a single-sentence answer.
Stage 5 — approval and release
The workflow closes when a product clears its checks.
Verbs and collocations: pass inspection, approve for release, certify compliance, sign off, clear the shipment.
Nouns: approval, certification, sign-off, compliance, clearance, quality certificate.
A sign-off — the formal approval that lets a batch ship — is the resolution point of many passages. A shipment held because it is "awaiting sign-off" is a classic Part 3 obstacle, and the question turns on who must approve it.
Fixed collocations to memorize as units

Do not memorize thirty nouns flat.
