Sentence insertion questions — where the task is to decide which of four marked positions a given sentence belongs in — reward a skill that most candidates never train directly: reading the seams between sentences rather than the sentences themselves. A candidate who reads the insertion sentence carefully and then re-reads the whole passage looking for a "good fit" is doing far more work than the question requires and arriving at a worse answer. The correct slot is marked by cohesion signals at the boundary — a pronoun that needs an antecedent, a connector that needs a preceding claim, a definite article that presupposes a prior mention. Read the seams, and the placement is often decidable from two sentences, not the whole paragraph.

Internal practice-corpus data shows that candidates lose sentence-insertion points at nearly twice the rate of ordinary detail questions, and the loss concentrates on passages where the insertion sentence is grammatically simple. Simplicity is the trap: when the sentence is easy to understand, candidates place it by meaning and ignore the cohesion evidence that actually determines the slot.

Read the seams, not the sentence

Every insertion point is a seam between two existing sentences. The correct seam is the one where the inserted sentence completes a cohesion relationship that is otherwise broken. There are three seam signals to check at each candidate position:

  • Backward reference. Does the inserted sentence contain a pronoun (it, they, this approach), a demonstrative (such, these), or a definite noun phrase (the revised schedule) that requires something already mentioned? If so, the correct slot must come after the sentence that introduces the referent. A slot where the referent has not yet appeared is disqualified regardless of topical fit.
  • Forward setup. Does the inserted sentence introduce a term, name, or idea that a later sentence then refers back to? If the sentence after a candidate slot begins with "This meant that…" and the inserted sentence supplies the thing that "this" points to, that seam is confirmed from the forward side.
  • Connector logic. Does the inserted sentence open with a discourse marker (however, as a result, for example, in addition)? The marker constrains what must precede it. "As a result" requires a cause immediately before; "for example" requires a general claim immediately before. Match the marker to the preceding sentence, not to the paragraph theme.

The four insertion failure modes

Failure 1 — Topical placement

The candidate places the sentence next to the paragraph that shares its topic, ignoring the boundary signals. Two adjacent sentences can share a topic while the seam between them still rejects the insertion because a pronoun would have no antecedent. Topic is a weak signal; cohesion is a strong one. When they conflict, cohesion wins.

Failure 2 — Orphaned reference

The candidate places a sentence containing "these findings" before any findings have been introduced, creating an orphaned reference. The passage reads smoothly at a glance because the sentence itself is well formed, but the reference chain is broken. Checking every pronoun and definite noun phrase in the inserted sentence for a valid antecedent at the chosen slot catches this failure every time.

Failure 3 — Connector mismatch

The candidate places a sentence beginning with "however" at a slot where the preceding sentence agrees rather than contrasts with it. The contrast marker demands an opposing prior claim; a slot without one is wrong even if the topic matches. The same logic applies to additive and causal markers.

Failure 4 — Flow-by-ear placement

The candidate reads all four versions aloud in their head and picks the one that "sounds smoothest." This works on easy passages and fails on the discriminating ones, because two placements can both sound smooth while only one satisfies the reference chain. Ear-based placement is a tiebreaker at best, never the primary procedure.

The placement procedure

Run the same four steps on every insertion question:

  1. Inventory the inserted sentence's cohesion hooks. Underline every pronoun, demonstrative, definite article, and opening connector. These are the constraints that will decide the slot before you consider meaning at all.
  2. Test each slot against the backward constraints. For every hook that points backward, eliminate any slot where the referent or cause has not yet appeared. This usually removes two of the four options immediately.
  3. Confirm with the forward constraint. Of the surviving slots, check whether the sentence after the slot refers back to something the inserted sentence supplies. A confirmed forward link decides the answer.

The drill routine

  • Weeks 1–2 — Hook inventory. Take insertion sentences in isolation and list their cohesion hooks without looking at the passage. Build the habit of seeing the reference and connector constraints first.
  • Weeks 3–4 — Slot elimination. For each question, eliminate slots by backward constraint before reading for meaning, and record how many options the constraints alone remove. On most items the answer is forced by elimination.
  • Weeks 5–6 — Forward confirmation. Practice confirming the surviving slot from the sentence that follows it, so placement rests on two-sided evidence rather than one.
  • Weeks 7–8 — Timed integration. Run insertion questions at test pace inside full reading sets, keeping the four-step procedure while the clock runs.
