TOEIC Link Speaking — Word Stress and Lexical Stress Placement: How Stressing the Right Syllable Recovers 2 to 3 Rubric Points on Intelligibility and Pronunciation
Ask most TOEIC Link candidates to say photography and they will produce every sound correctly and still be misunderstood, because they stress the first syllable — PHO-to-gra-phy — when English stresses the second: pho-TO-gra-phy. Every consonant is right, every vowel is present, and the listener still stumbles, because in English the shape of a word — which syllable is loud, long, and high, and which syllables collapse to a weak schwa — carries more identifying information than the individual sounds. Get the sounds right and the stress wrong, and you are less intelligible than a speaker who does the reverse.
This is the single most underweighted lever in the speaking section. Candidates drill individual phonemes — th, r versus l, final consonants — and never learn that English listeners locate words primarily by their stress pattern. A word said with flat, even stress, or stress on the wrong syllable, forces the listener to work to recognize it, and that processing effort reads directly as low intelligibility on the rubric. Why English hangs meaning on the stressed syllable
English is a stress-timed language: stressed syllables arrive at roughly regular intervals, and the unstressed syllables between them compress to fit. The stressed syllable is longer, louder, higher in pitch, and — critically — has a full vowel, while unstressed syllables reduce to a weak, colorless schwa (the uh sound). "Banana" is not ba-na-na with three equal as; it is buh-NA-nuh, one full vowel flanked by two schwas. A speaker who gives all three syllables equal weight and a full vowel is not saying the same word slightly differently — they are saying a word English listeners do not recognize on the first pass.
This is why stress errors are so costly. A mispronounced consonant usually leaves the word's shape intact, so the listener recovers it. A stress error destroys the shape, and shape is the listener's primary search key. The listener's ear runs a lookup on the stress pattern first; give it the wrong pattern and the lookup fails or slows, and slow recognition is exactly what the intelligibility sub-score penalizes.
Stress is more predictable than it looks
Learners treat word stress as a fact to memorize per word, so they memorize thousands of words and still guess. But English stress follows patterns — especially around suffixes — and learning the patterns replaces thousands of individual facts with a handful of rules.
Suffix-driven stress. Many suffixes pull the stress to a fixed position:
- -tion, -sion, -cion → stress on the syllable immediately before the suffix: informa-TION, deci-SION, sus-pi-cion → sus-PI-cion. Always.
- -ic, -ical → stress on the syllable before: eco-NO-mic, geo-GRA-phical.
- -ity, -ify, -graphy, -logy, -nomy → stress two syllables before the suffix ending, which lands on the syllable before the -i-/-o-: possi-BI-lity, pho-TO-graphy, tech-NO-logy, e-CO-nomy.
- -ate (verbs of 3+ syllables) → stress two syllables back: CO-mmuni-cate, DE-mons-trate.
Noun–verb stress shift. A large family of two-syllable words shifts stress by part of speech: the noun stresses the first syllable, the verb stresses the second. RE-cord (noun) versus re-CORD (verb); PRE-sent (noun/adjective) versus pre-SENT (verb); IN-crease, CON-tract, PRO-duce, PER-mit all follow this. Getting the shift wrong does not just sound off — it can signal the wrong word class and briefly derail the sentence.
Word-family drift. Stress often moves as a word changes form: PHO-tograph → pho-TO-graphy → photo-GRA-phic; E-conomy? no — e-CO-nomy → eco-NO-mic → eco-NO-mical. Learn the family together and hear the stress travel, rather than memorizing each form cold.
The four stress failure modes
Failure 1 — First-language default stress
Every language has a default stress tendency, and learners import it. Speakers of syllable-timed first languages give every syllable equal weight; speakers whose language fixes stress on the first or last syllable apply that fix to English words that stress elsewhere. "pho-TO-gra-phy" becomes "PHO-to-graph-y." The fix is to stop transferring the default and learn the English pattern per suffix, because the default is wrong more often than it is right.
Failure 2 — No vowel reduction
The mirror of Failure 1: the candidate places stress correctly but keeps a full vowel in the unstressed syllables. "Comfortable" said as COM-for-ta-ble with four full vowels is less intelligible than COMF-tuh-bul with the reductions English actually uses. Correct stress requires the unstressed syllables to collapse; a stressed syllable is only prominent by contrast with reduced ones. Drill the schwa, not just the stress.
Failure 3 — Missing the noun–verb shift
The candidate stresses RE-cord for both the noun and the verb, or pre-SENT for the gift. This is a discrete, high-frequency error because these words are common in business speech. The fix is to memorize the shift family as pairs and check part of speech before saying the word.
Failure 4 — Suffix stress ignored
The candidate stresses the root as they learned it and does not move the stress when a suffix demands it: "E-conomy" said correctly, but then "E-conomic" instead of "eco-NO-mic." The suffix -ic pulls stress forward and the candidate does not follow it. The fix is the suffix rules above: when you add the suffix, move the stress the rule requires.
The stress-mapping audit
Before a practice response, run this on the content words you expect to use.
- Mark the stress on every polysyllabic word. Say each aloud and identify which syllable is longest and loudest. If you are not sure, apply the suffix rule; if there is no suffix, check a dictionary once and lock it in.
- Reduce the rest. Confirm the unstressed syllables collapse to schwa. Say the word with exaggerated reduction, then dial it back — over-reducing in practice fixes under-reducing in performance.
- Check the shifters. For any noun–verb pair (record, present, increase, contract, produce, permit, object, project, conduct), confirm you are using the stress that matches the part of speech in your sentence.
A six-week drill
Weeks 1–2 — suffix rules. Take one suffix family a day (-tion, then -ic, then -ity, and so on) and drill twenty words each, saying them aloud with the stress on the rule-determined syllable. Record yourself and check that the stressed syllable is audibly longer and higher.
Weeks 3–4 — reduction. Same words, now with deliberate schwa reduction on the unstressed syllables. The goal is contrast: one prominent syllable, the rest collapsed. Shadow a native recording of each word and match the shape, not just the sounds.
Weeks 5–6 — shift families and connected speech. Drill the noun–verb pairs in full sentences ("We record the record"), then read short business paragraphs aloud, marking and hitting the stress on every polysyllabic word in flowing speech. By the end, the stressed syllable should land automatically, and the intelligibility gain — a listener who recognizes your words on the first pass — shows up directly in the score.
Word stress is the highest-leverage pronunciation lever precisely because it is invisible to most candidates: they hear their own sounds as correct and never notice the shape is wrong. Fix the shape and the same voice, saying the same sounds, suddenly reads as clear — and the rubric rewards clarity above almost everything else.
