A large share of TOEIC Link Writing tasks asks the test-taker to describe information from a chart, a table, or a set of figures. The core act in every one of these tasks is comparison: this quarter against last quarter, one region against another, the highest value against the rest. That means the comparative and superlative — higher, more slowly, the largest, far less than — are not decorative grammar but the load-bearing structure of the whole response. "Region A performed better than any region" accidentally claims A beat itself; "the number of users doubled more than the previous year" garbles which quantity grew and by how much. The grammar failures that misstate a comparison
Four failures do most of the damage. A comparative without its second term leaves the relationship unspecified, and the reader cannot check it against the chart because the claim is only half made.
The third is the confused comparative-superlative boundary. "Region A was the higher of all four regions" mixes a two-item form with a four-item set; with more than two items the superlative — the highest — is required. The fourth is the illogical or self-including comparison: "A grew more than any region" includes A in the group it is being compared against, which is impossible. The fix is any other region. Precision means selecting the comparative that describes the real relationship, not just any grammatical one. Start with the direction and magnitude the data shows. If two values are close, a modified comparative — slightly higher, marginally lower, a little more slowly — reports the closeness honestly; writing "far higher" for a two-percent gap overstates the data. Then choose comparative versus superlative by how many items are in play. Week two drills form in isolation. Take twenty pairs and sets of numbers and write a single accurate comparison for each, forcing every one to name both terms and to choose comparative or superlative correctly by the number of items.
