Between the talks in the TOEIC Link listening module there is a stretch of dead air — the narrator reading directions, the pause before the next audio begins. To an untrained listener this is nothing: time to wait. To a trained listener it is the single most valuable resource in the section, because it is the only moment when you can read the questions before the audio that answers them plays. What you do in that window determines whether you listen to the talk as an open-ended stream of speech or as a targeted search for three specific facts you already know you need. The difference between those two modes is worth a measurable number of points, and it is entirely a matter of preparation, not hearing ability.

The core move is prediction. In the preview window you do not merely read the questions — you predict what kind of answer each question wants and, where possible, what the answer is likely to be. When the audio then plays, you are not comprehending in general; you are confirming or correcting a set of expectations. Confirmation is far faster and far more accurate than open comprehension, which is why prediction converts the same listening ability into a higher score.

Why prediction beats open listening

Open listening — trying to understand everything and answer afterward — fails under time pressure for a structural reason: working memory cannot hold a full ninety-second talk. By the time the questions appear, the details they ask about have decayed. The listener remembers the gist but not the specific number, name, or reason the stem demands, and is forced to guess. Prediction fixes this by moving the questions to the front. When you know before the audio that question two asks why the speaker is calling, you listen for the reason and lock it the instant it is stated, discarding everything else. You are filtering the stream through the questions instead of trying to store the whole stream. In the preview window, decide that you will lock this answer immediately and then stop actively hunting for it. Predicting where the answer lives is as valuable as predicting what it is.

Target 2 — Detail questions with numeric or named answers

Stems asking for a time, price, quantity, date, or name tell you the exact shape of the answer before you hear it. You cannot predict the value, but you can predict the category, so you listen with a filter set for "a number" or "a name" and catch it when it passes. Pre-reading the answer options sharpens this further — if the four choices are all times, you know a time is coming.

Target 3 — Inference and implication questions

Stems like "What does the speaker imply?" or "What will the listener probably do next?" cannot be answered by catching a single word; they require synthesis. In the preview window, flag these as slow questions and plan to answer them after the audio, using the gist you retained. Predicting that a question is an inference item prevents you from wasting the preview window trying to pre-load an answer that is not stated.

Target 4 — Answer-option prediction

When time in the window allows, read the four answer choices, not just the stem. The options often reveal the axis the question turns on — three plausible reasons and one absurd one, or four times that differ only in the hour. Reading them lets you predict which distinction the audio will hinge on, so you listen for exactly that distinction. The preview routine, step by step

The window is short, so the routine must be fixed and fast:

  1. Read all three stems first, in order. Do not read one and wait; the talk answers all three, and knowing all three shapes how you listen to the whole thing.
  2. Classify each stem by prediction target. Purpose, detail, inference, or option-driven. This takes under two seconds per stem once trained and tells you which answers to grab early and which to defer.
  3. Pre-load the answer category for detail items. "A price," "a date," "a department." Hold these as filters.
  4. Read answer options only if time remains. For predictable detail sets, the options add the most value; for inference sets, they add the least.
  5. Enter the audio with an ordered target list. You now listen to confirm predictions, not to comprehend blind.

This routine is deliberately mechanical. Under test pressure the mechanical routine is what survives; improvised previewing collapses. Week three — full routine under time. Run the complete five-step routine at real test pace. Track two numbers: preview completion rate (did you finish the routine before audio start) and prediction accuracy (how often your pre-loaded expectation matched).

Week four — trap inoculation. Deliberately practice conflict-and-update talks that punish over-prediction. Train the loose-hypothesis stance: predict, then overwrite. Confirm that your accuracy on "changed fact" items rises, since those are where over-prediction costs the most.

What prediction is really buying

The preview window does not give you new hearing ability. It gives you a place to stand. Open listening asks you to catch everything and sort it afterward; prediction lets you decide in advance what matters and ignore the rest in real time. That is the entire mechanism — attention allocated before the audio instead of scrambled during it. Every point prediction earns comes from having already decided, in the dead air, exactly what you were listening for. Turn that dead air into a head start, and the same ears score higher.
