Inference questions are the single most reliable discriminator between the mid and upper reading bands on the TOEIC Link reading module. The mechanical questions — direct detail, vocabulary-in-context, reference resolution — separate weak readers from average readers. Inference questions separate average readers from strong ones, because they cannot be answered by matching words on the page. They require the candidate to hold the passage's claim at exactly the right scope and exactly the right strength, and then reject every answer choice that drifts on either axis.

The failure pattern is consistent across practice corpora. Candidates in the mid reading band do not usually pick answers that are outright false. They pick answers that are true but out of scope — supported by the world, or by general knowledge, but not by this passage — or true but overstated — supported by the passage in weak form but inflated into a stronger claim than the text licenses. Distractor writers know this, and the three wrong answers on a hard inference item are almost always engineered along exactly these two axes. Once you can name the axis a distractor is drifting on, elimination becomes mechanical.

The two failure axes

Axis one — scope creep

A scope error accepts a claim that is true in a wider or narrower domain than the passage establishes. The passage says a policy applied to the Tokyo branch; the distractor says the policy applied company-wide. The passage describes one quarter's results; the distractor generalizes to the fiscal year. The claim is not false in some absolute sense — the company-wide policy may well exist — but the passage does not support it, and on an inference item "supported by the passage" is the only standard that counts.

Scope creep runs in both directions. Over-broadening is more common: a single instance is generalized into a rule. Under-narrowing also appears: a general principle stated in the passage is pinned to one specific case the passage never mentions. Both are scope errors because both replace the passage's actual domain with a different one.

Axis two — degree inflation

A degree error accepts a claim whose strength exceeds what the passage licenses. The passage says a change "may improve" throughput; the distractor says it "will improve" throughput. The passage says a result was "somewhat unexpected"; the distractor says it was "shocking." The propositional content matches — the same subject, the same predicate — but the modal strength, the quantifier, or the evaluative intensity has been dialed up.

Degree inflation is harder to catch than scope creep because the inflated word often feels like a reasonable paraphrase. "Many" becomes "most," "often" becomes "always," "contributed to" becomes "caused." Each substitution is small, and each is fatal. The passage's hedge is data; the distractor's confidence is invention.

The four-step elimination protocol

Apply these four steps in order to every inference item. The order matters — steps one and two are cheap and eliminate the majority of distractors before you have to do the expensive reasoning in steps three and four.

  1. Locate the anchor. Every defensible inference traces to a specific span in the passage. Before evaluating any answer choice, find the sentence or clause the question stem points to. If a choice cannot be anchored to a span, it is out of scope by default.

  2. Test each choice for scope. For each answer choice, ask: is the domain of this claim — the who, where, when, how-many — identical to the domain of the anchor? If the choice widens, narrows, or shifts the domain, eliminate it. This step alone typically removes one or two distractors.

  3. Test surviving choices for degree. For each choice that passed the scope test, compare its modal and evaluative strength to the anchor. Underline the strength words in both — the modals, the quantifiers, the intensifiers — and check that the choice does not exceed the anchor. If it does, eliminate it.

  4. Confirm entailment on the survivor. The remaining choice should be one the passage forces you to accept, not merely one it permits. Read it back against the anchor and confirm the inference is necessary, not just possible. If two choices survive to this step, one of them has a scope or degree drift you missed in steps two and three — go back and find it.

Why speed follows accuracy, not the reverse

Candidates who miss inference items often blame time pressure and respond by reading faster. This is backwards. The four-step protocol is not slow once it is automatic — the scope and degree tests take a few seconds each — and it converts a guess into a decision. Reading faster without the protocol produces more confident wrong answers, not more right ones. The correct sequence is: build the elimination habit until it is reflexive, and speed arrives as a byproduct of no longer re-reading choices you should have eliminated on the first pass.

A three-week drill schedule

Week one — scope isolation. Work only scope. Take a set of inference items and, for each distractor, write one word: "broaden," "narrow," "shift," or "match." Do not yet worry about degree. The goal is to make the domain-comparison instinct automatic. By the end of the week you should be naming the scope drift on a distractor within a few seconds of reading it.

Week two — degree isolation. Work only degree. For each item, underline every modal, quantifier, and intensifier in the anchor and in each answer choice. Mark whether the choice is "equal," "stronger," or "weaker" than the anchor. Eliminate everything stronger. A choice that is weaker than the anchor is usually safe on an inference item — the passage over-supports it — but confirm it still answers the actual question.

Week three — integrated timed sets. Run full inference sets under the reading-module time budget, applying all four steps. Track two numbers: accuracy, and the axis of every miss. If your misses cluster on scope, your week-one habit has not held under time pressure; if they cluster on degree, your week-two habit is the weak point. Re-drill the weaker axis in isolation before your next full set.
