The frustrating part is that implication items are not harder to reason about than stated-fact items — they are harder to recognize as a different task. The reading is the same; what changes is the last step. Instead of matching a choice to a line, you match a choice to an inference the lines jointly license. Stated versus implied — recognizing which task you are on

Suppose an email states that the shipment will arrive Thursday, and a second paragraph states that the store closes for inventory every Friday. The implication — that the goods will be available for sale before the closure, or that staff must process them Thursday evening — is not written anywhere. It is the product of fact one (arrival Thursday) and fact two (closed Friday). A correct implication choice is one you can trace to two such facts in the passage. If you can point to only one supporting fact, the choice is probably a stated-fact distractor; if you can point to none, it is an over-reading trap.

The habit to build is verbalizing the chain: "This is true because the passage says A, and it also says B, and A plus B gives me the answer." If you cannot fill in both A and B from the text, do not select the choice, however plausible it sounds. This two-fact discipline is what separates inference from guessing.

The four distractor types on implication items

Implication items are defended by distractors that specifically punish uncontrolled inference. Recognizing the four types lets you eliminate rather than agonize.

  • The stated-fact restatement. A choice that simply paraphrases one line of the passage. It is true, but it is not an implication — it is stated. On an implication stem, a choice you can match to a single line is almost always wrong for that reason alone.
  • The over-reach. A conclusion that would require a third fact the passage never provides, or a real-world assumption the text does not license. It feels reasonable because it is the kind of thing that is often true — but it is not supported by the passage's two facts.
  • The reversed inference. A choice that draws the opposite conclusion from the same facts — for example, inferring a delay where the facts imply an early arrival. It uses the right evidence and the wrong direction, catching readers who registered the topic but not the polarity.
  • The scope shift. A choice that generalizes a specific fact ("this customer was refunded") into a broad claim ("the company refunds all customers"), or narrows a general statement into a specific one the text never made. This overlaps with the answer-choice scope trap, which trains the too-broad-versus-too-narrow judgment that scope-shift distractors exploit.

Three of these four distractors are eliminated not by finding more evidence but by checking the candidate answer against the two-fact chain: the restatement has only one fact, the over-reach has a missing fact, and the scope shift misuses a fact it does have. Only the reversed inference requires you to recheck direction, and that is a fast, specific check once you know to run it.

Managing time — inference items are not slower to solve, only slower to start

Candidates often report that implication items eat their clock. The cause is rarely the reasoning; it is the wasted scanning that precedes it. A reader who does not classify the stem searches for a matching line, fails to find one, re-reads, and only then starts to infer — three passes where one would do. Classify first, and the item runs at nearly stated-fact speed: read the two relevant facts once, build the chain, check the choices against it.

The one legitimate time cost is that implication items usually require reading two locations in the passage rather than one, because the two supporting facts are rarely adjacent. Budget for that by reading the whole relevant paragraph pair before you look at the choices, rather than bouncing back to the text once per choice. Implication skill is built by separating the classification drill from the inference drill and only then combining them under time.

Week two — the two-fact chain, untimed. On implication items only, write out fact A and fact B for the correct answer before checking the key. If you cannot name both facts, you either chose wrong or the item was stated-fact misclassified. This builds the habit of demanding two supports.

Week three — distractor autopsy. For every implication item, label each wrong choice as restatement, over-reach, reversed, or scope shift. Naming the trap type turns elimination from a feeling into a checklist, and it exposes which trap you personally fall for most.
