Ultrasonic thickness reports are one of the most predictable sources of TOEIC Link reading passages because they follow a fixed logic: a wall thickness is measured, compared against a minimum, converted into a corrosion rate, and turned into a remaining-life figure that drives a re-inspection date. The reading questions almost always land on that conversion chain — from a measured number to a decision — so a candidate who can read the integrity vocabulary fluently reaches the answer sentence far faster than one still decoding the units and abbreviations. This cluster organizes the vocabulary the way the reports use it and closes with the report frames that carry the questions.
Ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTM) is a non-destructive method in which a probe sends a sound pulse into a pipe or vessel wall and times its return to calculate the remaining metal thickness. When many readings are taken on a grid and plotted, the result is a corrosion map that shows where metal loss is concentrated. Because the whole report is built on comparing a present thickness to a required thickness, the vocabulary of thickness and loss dominates the passages, and learning it as a related set is far more efficient than meeting each term cold.
Measurement vocabulary
The measured quantity is the wall thickness or remaining thickness, reported against three reference values that passages use precisely: the nominal thickness (the original as-built thickness), the minimum required thickness or t-min (the calculated thickness below which the component is unsafe), and the previous reading (the last survey's value, used to compute a rate). Core measurement terms to lock in as a group: probe and transducer (the device that sends the pulse), couplant (the gel that carries sound into the metal), calibration (setting the gauge against a known reference block), CML or TML (condition/thickness monitoring location — a fixed point re-measured each survey), grid (the pattern of measurement points), and general versus localized metal loss. The severity judgment in almost every passage is a comparison of the remaining thickness against t-min at a named CML, so these are the words the question stem will echo.
Wall-loss and corrosion-rate vocabulary
The interpretive core of the report is the corrosion rate — the metal loss per year, calculated from the change between two readings divided by the time between them. Two rates recur and passages distinguish them: the short-term corrosion rate (from the last interval) and the long-term corrosion rate (from the original nominal). From the rate and the remaining margin, the report derives the remaining life and the next-inspection date.
The loss-mechanism vocabulary maps directly to patterns on the corrosion map, and learning the pairing is a high-value study move: general corrosion (uniform thinning), localized corrosion and pitting (isolated deep spots), erosion-corrosion (flow-driven loss at bends and elbows), under-deposit corrosion, and CUI (corrosion under insulation, a recurring TOEIC Link topic because it hides loss beneath cladding). A map that flags "a cluster of low readings at the six-o'clock position downstream of the elbow" is describing erosion-corrosion; one that flags "isolated pits beneath the insulation support ring" is describing CUI. The report ends in an integrity decision, and the vocabulary of that decision is testable: within acceptance or fit for service (thickness above t-min with adequate remaining life), monitor or trend (margin adequate but rate elevated), reduce inspection interval, repair or re-rate (lower the allowable pressure), and replace or remove from service. The recommendation sentence is chosen directly from the relationship between remaining thickness, corrosion rate, and remaining life, so locating those three figures usually locates the recommended action.
Report-language patterns that carry the questions
The passages reuse four frames. The measurement frame states the reading: "At CML 14, remaining thickness was 6.4 mm against a t-min of 6.0 mm." The rate frame computes: "Compared with the 8.1 mm recorded three years ago, this indicates a long-term corrosion rate of approximately 0.57 mm per year." The life frame projects: "At that rate the component reaches t-min in under one year." The recommendation frame prescribes: "It is recommended that CML 14 be re-inspected within six months and that a repair scope be prepared for the next outage."
Inference questions cluster on the rate and life frames, because those are where the analyst turns numbers into judgment rather than reporting a value. Train yourself to find the three anchor figures — remaining thickness, corrosion rate, remaining life — and read the sentence around them first, because they link the measurement to the recommendation that the question is usually asking about.
A one-week consolidation drill
Twenty minutes a day. Days one and two: write the three reference thicknesses (nominal, t-min, previous) and define each in one sentence. Days three and four: define short-term versus long-term corrosion rate and name the loss mechanisms (general, pitting, erosion-corrosion, CUI). Days five and six: take any survey sentence and label its report frame. Day seven: time yourself on two passages, locating the three anchor figures before reading their sentences. The goal is to make the integrity vocabulary recognition-fast, so the reading questions become a matter of locating a known pattern rather than decoding an unfamiliar one.
