An inference answer is correct on the TOEIC Link module when the passage provides evidence that makes the option a necessary or near-necessary consequence — something a careful reader must conclude, not merely something they could imagine. The support boundary is the line between "the text guarantees this" and "the text is consistent with this." Distractors are engineered to live just outside that line: consistent with the passage, comfortable to a reasoning mind, and unsupported by any specific sentence. The whole skill of inference is refusing everything on the far side of the boundary, however reasonable it looks.

The practical test is a challenge question you pose to every candidate option: which sentence in the passage forces this? If you can point to a clause — or a tight combination of two clauses — that makes the option unavoidable, it is inside the boundary. Failure 1 — World-knowledge substitution

The candidate answers from what they know about how businesses, schedules, or people generally behave, rather than from what the passage states. A memo announcing a system upgrade "over the weekend" invites the inference that "employees will not work Saturday" — reasonable in the world, absent from the text. The remediation is to quarantine world knowledge: it can help you understand the passage, but it can never supply the evidence for an answer.

Failure 2 — One-step-too-far extension

The candidate correctly identifies a supported detail, then extends it beyond its evidentiary reach. The passage says "sales rose in three consecutive quarters"; the distractor says "sales will rise next quarter." The first is stated; the second is a projection the text never makes. The remediation is to stop the inference at the boundary of the evidence — a supported trend does not license a future claim.

Failure 3 — Cause-to-intent leap

The candidate reads a described action and infers an unstated motive or intention. The passage says "the company relocated its warehouse closer to the port"; the distractor says "the company intends to expand overseas exports." Proximity to a port is stated; export intent is invented. The remediation is to treat motive as un-inferable unless the text explicitly attributes it.

Failure 4 — Absolute-from-qualified overreach

The candidate upgrades a qualified statement into an absolute one. The passage says "the policy applies to most full-time staff"; the distractor says "the policy applies to all employees." The quantifier has been silently strengthened, and the option is now unsupported. The remediation is to police quantifiers and modals — most is not all, may is not will, often is not always — because a single upgraded word moves an option across the boundary.

Failure 5 — Comparative invention

The candidate infers a comparison the passage never draws. The text praises Product A's durability; the distractor concludes "Product A is more durable than Product B." Product B may not even appear in the passage, or may appear without any durability claim. The remediation is to require both terms of any comparison to be present and compared in the text before accepting a comparative option.

The boundary-test applied in sequence

Boundary control works best as a two-pass elimination, not a single hunt for the best answer.

  • First pass — eliminate everything outside the boundary. Take each option and ask "which sentence forces this?" Cross out every option whose only justification is plausibility, world knowledge, or a one-step extension. Most inference items collapse to one or two survivors after this pass alone, because the distractors were built to fail exactly this question.
  • Second pass — verify the survivor against its sentence. For the remaining option, name the specific clause that forces it and confirm the option adds nothing that clause does not contain. If you cannot name the clause, you have not found the answer — you have found another plausible distractor.
  • Prefer the cautious survivor. When two options both seem supported, the correct one is almost always the more modest claim. Overreach is the distractor's signature; a TOEIC Link inference answer rarely says more than the evidence strictly allows.
