Why exact meaning is rarely necessary
The instinct when meeting an unknown word is to want its precise definition, as if the sentence cannot be understood without it. But most questions turn on the general direction of meaning, not its fine detail. If a passage says a policy was "rescinded" and you do not know the word, you do not need to know it means "officially cancelled"; you need to know, from the surrounding sentences, that the policy is no longer in effect. That much the context almost always supplies. Chasing the exact definition wastes the seconds you do not have; recovering the direction — positive or negative, more or less, cause or effect — is usually enough and is usually fast.

Definition and restatement signals
Writers often define hard words in place, using commas, dashes, or phrases like that is, in other words, meaning. Example and consequence signals
When a word is followed by examples (such as, for instance) or by its consequences, the specifics reveal the general. "The equipment was obsolete: it could not run current software and parts were no longer made" tells you "obsolete" means out of date, because the consequences spell it out. Word-part and part-of-speech signals
Sometimes the word's own parts help — a familiar root, a negative prefix (un-, in-, dis-), a suffix that marks a noun or verb. And its position in the sentence tells you at minimum whether it is a thing, an action, or a description, which is often enough to keep the sentence's shape intact even when the exact sense stays fuzzy. When you hit an unknown word, do not stop and stare — that is where time is lost. Run a fixed, fast sequence instead.
- Decide whether the word even matters. Finish the sentence first. If you understood the sentence without the word, the word was decorative; keep reading and never return to it. - Fix the direction. If the word matters, decide only whether it is positive or negative, more or less, cause or effect. Use the nearest contrast, definition, or consequence signal. Do not reach for the exact meaning.
- Plug in a placeholder. Substitute a simple known word of the right direction — "bad thing," "cancelled," "increased" — and read on. A rough placeholder keeps comprehension moving and is almost always precise enough for the question.
- Return only if the question demands it. If a vocabulary-in-context question asks specifically what the word means, come back with the direction you already fixed and match it against the options, eliminating any that point the wrong way. The habit is trained by refusing to look words up on the first pass.
