TOEIC Link Scoring System & CEFR Alignment: Complete Guide

TOEIC Link uses an entirely different scoring system from the traditional TOEIC. From the 0–25 scale and direct CEFR mapping to adaptive scoring and AI hybrid evaluation — here's everything you need to know about how your score is determined.

The 0-25 Scoring Scale: How It Works

If you're accustomed to the traditional TOEIC L&R scale of 10–990 or the S&W scale of 0–200 per section, TOEIC Link scoring may feel unfamiliar. In TOEIC Link, each module (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing) is scored individually on a 0–25 point scale. There is no combined total score.

This simpler scale is intentional. Each score maps directly to a CEFR level, so you can immediately understand your proficiency level just by looking at your score. For employers and institutions, it eliminates the need for complex conversion charts when evaluating language competency.

CEFR Level Mapping: What Your Score Means

The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is the global standard for describing language ability. TOEIC Link was built with direct CEFR alignment from the ground up — fundamentally different from the traditional TOEIC's approximate CEFR mapping.

TOEIC Link ScoreCEFR LevelProficiency DescriptionWorkplace Context
21-25C1Advanced — Professional proficiencyInternational presentations, complex negotiations, technical writing
16-20B2Upper-Intermediate — Independent userBusiness emails, conference calls, report writing
11-15B1Intermediate — ThresholdRoutine work English, simple meetings, standard emails
6-10A2Elementary — Basic userSimple greetings, basic instructions, short messages
0-5A1Beginner — StarterSelf-introduction, very basic phrases

Key advantage: Because TOEIC Link maps directly to CEFR, your score is immediately comparable to IELTS, Cambridge, TOEFL, and other international exams. This makes it invaluable for multinational companies making hiring and placement decisions.

Adaptive Scoring: How L&R Modules Work

The Listening and Reading modules in TOEIC Link use Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT). This is fundamentally different from the traditional TOEIC, where every test-taker answers the same fixed set of questions.

In CAT, the difficulty of questions adjusts in real time based on your answer patterns. Consecutive correct answers trigger harder questions, while incorrect answers lead to easier ones. This mechanism enables precise ability measurement with fewer questions.

1

Starts at Medium Difficulty

The test begins with questions at an intermediate level, close to the estimated ability of an average test-taker.

2

Real-Time Difficulty Adjustment

Correct answers make the next question harder; incorrect answers make it easier. Each question updates your estimated ability.

3

Converges to Your Score

After enough questions, the system pinpoints your ability level with high precision and converts it to a 0-25 scale score.

Important: Don't panic when questions get harder — it means you're answering correctly. In CAT, your score reflects both accuracy and the difficulty level of the questions you answered. Getting a hard question wrong hurts less than getting an easy one wrong.

AI + Human Hybrid Scoring: S&W Modules

The Speaking and Writing modules are not scored by adaptive algorithms like Listening and Reading. Instead, they use a hybrid approach combining AI and human raters. This dual-check system ensures score reliability and fairness.

AI Primary Scoring

AI models trained on millions of English responses evaluate grammar accuracy, vocabulary range, logical coherence, and task completion.

For Speaking, the AI also analyzes pronunciation, fluency, and intonation. This primary scoring is completed within seconds.

Human Secondary Review

Trained human raters review a portion of AI-generated scores, focusing on cases where the AI's confidence is low or edge cases are detected.

When there is a significant discrepancy between AI and human scores, additional review is triggered to ensure final score fairness.

Score Comparison: TOEIC L&R vs TOEIC Link

ETS has not published an official conversion formula, but because both tests map to CEFR, an approximate comparison via CEFR is possible. Note that this table provides reference values, not exact conversions.

Score Delivery: Results Within 48 Hours

With the traditional TOEIC, waiting 2-4 weeks for scores was standard. TOEIC Link delivers scores within 48 hours of test completion. This is a major advantage for hiring processes and internal English proficiency assessments.

L&R Modules

Instantly scored by adaptive algorithms. Scores are calculated immediately after test completion.

S&W Modules

AI primary scoring + human review takes up to 48 hours. In some cases, scores arrive within 24 hours.
